CONCERTS AND FESTIVALS
Giving young players a chance to develop performance skills and musicality whilst gaining confidence
I put on informal concerts about twice a year where my younger players have a chance to perform their solos, as well as to play duets and trios with others. Learning to play with others is a great way to develop musicianship, as it requires skills that are not developed to the same degree in solo playing.
Music is a gift to be shared and enjoyed together, and my concerts are a perfect way for my younger players to learn to play in front of others in a relaxed and friendly setting. Playing and performing together gives the players an opportunity to build a healthy attitude to learning and making mistakes. I encourage my pupils to strive for a high standard, but also to develop the resilience to be able to cope when the nerves kick in. Through the concerts I have seen real progress in that attitude amongst my players, which not only improves their playing but has benefits in other areas of their lives.
Entering music festivals, such as Wirral Festival of Music and Drama, allows students to perform amongst a wider pool of players. Getting feedback from an adjudicator can be helpful and encouraging. Parents and pupils get to meet one another, fostering a wider musical community.
