PLAYING FOR LIFE, NOT FOR EXAMS
Music is a wonderful gift, and in my teaching I aim to share that gift both by inspiring my students to enjoy making music, and by giving them a strong foundation of musical skills that will last into adulthood - teaching music ‘for life’ , rather than simply to pass exams.

Bringing the best out of every learner

Music is a wonderful gift, and in my teaching I aim to share that gift by both inspiring my students to enjoy making music and giving them a strong foundation of musical skills that will last into adulthood - teaching music ‘for life’ , rather than simply to pass exams.

As a classical musician I emphasise developing a sound technique, efficient practice skills and musical expression, I tailor my approach to the needs and expectations of the individual - there is no ‘one size fits all’.

Classical music training develops skills that are not learnt in other types of music but provides an excellent foundation for all genres. I am happy to prepare students for ABRSM or Trinity exams, but I don't consider exams to be an end in themselves. It is my experience that children who move from one exam to another without playing other pieces and consolidating their skills don't form a foundation that enables them to learn independently and to come back to playing in adulthood.
I aim to teach 'for life', both in building a good range of skills and developing a love of music. The process is as important as the results; I take time to help my students find where music lessons and practice fit in with the rest of life in a way that is positive and beneficial. For a teenager, practising an instrument can make a constructive and enjoyable break from their academic studies.
